USDA Launches Ask The Expert (USDA)

USDA launched Ask The Expert, a knowledge-based search engine that holds nearly 2,000 questions and answers for a plethora of USDA programs. According to the Agriculture Secretary, "This exciting new tool is one of the many ways the USDA is working hard to use technology to provide the public with high quality service."

EPA and Other Federal Agencies Collaborate to Improve Chemical Screening (EPA)

The FDA joins the EPA, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences' National Toxicology Program (NTP), and the National Institutes of Health's Chemical Genomics Center (NCGC) in the Tox21 collaboration, which uses federal agencies' combined resources to develop methods to more effectively predict how chemicals will impact human health and the environment. According to the NTP, "The addition of the FDA...allows biomedical researchers and regulatory scientists...to more rapidly screen chemicals and find more effective ways to protect the health of the public."

Sen. Lautenberg Introduces Bills to Protect Chemical and Water Plants Nationwide (Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ))

Sen. Lautenberg (D-NJ) introduced the Secure Water Facilities Act and the Secure Chemical Facilities Act, which will "close a gap that leaves millions of families vulnerable to an attack on America's chemical plants and water treatment facilities." According to Lautenberg, this legislation will "ensure a thorough review of risk, and help us move toward more secure plants and safer communities."

EPA Seeks Employee Participation in Chemical Safety Inspections (EPA)

The EPA has released interim guidance that will allow employees and employee representatives to participate in chemical safety inspections, increasing transparency in the inspection process. The EPA is requiring state and local agencies to adopt a similar procedure under the Risk Management Program (RMP). Worker safety advocates have long sought enforcement of this feature of the Clean Air Act.

Administration Launches Oil Spill Response Website (deepwaterhorizonresponse.com)

National Incident Commander Admiral Thad Allen announced the launch of RestoreTheGulf.gov, a website dedicated to improving public access to information about the Deepwater Horizon oil spill response and recovery. According to Allen, the web site "will provide even greater transparency and openness about the BP oil spill." The Unified Area Command's current website, www.deepwaterhorizonresponse.com, will be phased out over the coming weeks as information there is moved to RestoreTheGulf.gov.

Obama Administration Holds America's Great Oudoors Listening Session (EPA)

Obama administration top officials are holding a listening session tomorrow, July 8, in accordance with the America's Great Outdoors Initiative. The goal of the session is to hear the public's  ideas for creating a conservation and recreation agenda and reconnecting Americans to the oudoors.

EPA is Asking for Commentary on Their "Fracking" Study (EPA)

The EPA is conducting a study to determine the impact of hydraulic fracturing on drinking water, public health, and the ecosystems surrounding “fracking” sites. In July and August, the EPA is hosting public meetings across the country seeking stakeholders' input. Meetings will be: 

  • July 8, Fortworth, TX
  • July 13, Denver, CO
  • July 22, Canonsburg, PA
  • August 12, Binghamton, NY

Energy Department Pressed to Release Records (Friends of the Earth)

FOE filed a FOIA request to require the Department of Energy to release the details of its bailout agreement with Southern Company. According to FOE, the bailout, a loan guarantee for the construction of nuclear reactors, could cost taxpayers billions. "Taxpayers have been kept in the dark about the details of this deal entered into on their behalf. The public has a right to know the terms of this agreement."
