The witnesses asserted that by labeling information about potentially dangerous chemicals as trade secrets, the public is denied the opportunity to evaluate the risks of chemicals and take action to protect public health and the environment.

Officials vow air near schools will be tested for toxics

Responding to a new report exposing air pollution levels near schools, the chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee pledged Tuesday to "do what I have to do" to ensure that the government monitors the air for toxic chemicals outside schools across the nation.
